Cotton sowing delays due to late releasing of canal water

Punjab agriculture and farmer welfare department director JS Bains confirmed that late releasing of canal water had posed serious problems for department and farmers. He added, “We are worried as sowing has been done in only 9,600 hectares as compared to 22,000 in previous year. Even now the canal water has not been released at full intensity in some areas in Fazilka and Muktsar, which may further delay the process. The delayed sowing is prone pest attack. The department will hold a meeting in this regard on May 4”.

Nylon chips price weakens amid polyester substitution

In China, bright conventional spinning nylon-6 prices was down US$82 a ton in the third week of April while semi-dull high-speed spinning chip fell US$66 a ton as compared to last week.

Nylon or polyamide chip prices in Asia trended down amid dull market sentiment and downward pressure from raw materials market. In China, nylon chip offers were lowered as downstream demand was weak during the week.

Most producers were cutting production as buying interest in end-sectors was dented by sluggish feedstock and as a result made less procurement.

Caprolactum price dives down on thin activity

In the third week of April, the SE and FE Asian caprolactum markers on the lower end fell US$50 a ton. In China, spot liquid good offers was down US$161 a ton while solid goods declined US$209 a ton on the week). European goods plunged US$30 a ton.

Caprolactum prices in Asia plunged that week on softening feedstock market and lackluster demand. In China, CPL offers moved down due to lower demand while plant run rates declined to 69% in the week.

India imported 3,235 tons of caprolactum in February 2018, down 32% as compared to the previous month.

Textile mills attempting for cut in hank yarn obligation

The association said that the mills are unable to market the hank yarn as the demand has reduced over the years. But, they might face action for not meeting the hank yarn obligation as hank yarn is covered under Essential Commodities Act. The Ministry should hence reduce the hank yarn obligation to 10 % from the current 40 %. In the letter to the minister from the association and its members, the mills pointed out that between 1987-1988 and 2009-2010, the number of handlooms declined by 41 % (from 36.10 lakh looms to 21.47 lakh).
