Yangi brings water-free cellulose packaging technology

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2026-09-04 13:50:59 – USA

Swedish materials technology company Yangi is expanding into the United States with its Cellera dry-forming platform, offering packaging manufacturers a cellulose-based alternative to conventional molded-fiber production.

Unlike traditional molded-fiber processes, which suspend cellulose fibres in water before forming and drying them, Yangi’s Cellera technology combines airlaid fibre formation with three-dimensional thermoforming. The process eliminates the water-slurry stage and associated drying requirements, allowing cellulose fibres to be formed directly into rigid packaging.

Yangi claims Cellera can reduce process-water consumption by 90% to 99% compared with conventional wet molding. The company also reports energy consumption of approximately 1.8 kWh per kilogram of material, compared with a typical 4–7 kWh/kg for wet molding. According to Yangi, the energy comparison is supported by a third-party-verified life-cycle assessment.
