YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2014-04-16 12:00:00 – Uganda

Uganda, once a leading exporter of quality cotton some years back is facing a major decline as most cotton producing areas are located in hard to reach areas which contribute to poor and less production. Moreover it is exported in the raw form, further affecting cotton exports.

The Trade minister would be put forward their recommendations at the 9th ministerial conference in Bali, once the recommendations get implemented, Uganda to see a revival in its cotton sector.

The recommendation is to provide funding to increase production capacity and quality to gain a guaranteed market among the List Developed Countries (LDC) members of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and beyond.

Also the minister of trade, industry and cooperatives would to remove all blockades that had been hindering some commodities like cotton and other agricultural products from member countries to access their markets.

As they are leading WTO this year, they would definitely want the agreement to be implemented, which will support the country to earn more revenue from cotton exports just like other crops.

Due to drop in quantity of exported cotton, Uganda ’s cotton export earnings plunged by 58.6 percent from 76 million dollars in 2012 to 31.42 million dollars in 2013.
