The union textiles ministry wants to link the textile industry to be linked with Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act or MNREGA with an objective to help attract skilled workers to the industry that is facing severe shortage of manpower.

Textiles Minister Kavuru Sambasiva Rao told news agency that he has written a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh proposing to link the employment guarantee scheme to the textiles sector to minimise the problems of skilled labourers.

Rao stated that the ministry has set a target to train 1.5 million people in the textiles industry in the next three years which will make textiles exports globally competitive. The government has already allocated Rs 1,900 crore for skills development in the sector.
