Textile Ministry Secretary visits municipal textile waste processing center

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2025-11-20 14:36:49 – India

Union Textile Ministry Secretary Neelam Shami Rao visited India’s first municipal-supported textile waste processing centre in CBD Belapur and appreciated the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) for creating an innovative, scalable model that turns discarded clothes into reusable products.

During her visit, Rao reviewed the centre’s processes, including its six-step fabric waste segregation system and mechanical fibre testing. She expressed satisfaction with how citizens’ discarded garments are being converted into attractive and market-ready items.

The project uses large textile collection bins placed in high-footfall areas such as housing complexes, malls and offices, with support from the SBI Foundation and Tisser Artisan Trust. A dedicated vehicle gathers the waste and transports it to the Shakuntala Mahajan Multi-Purpose Building in CBD Belapur for processing.

At the facility, usable fabric is upcycled with handloom techniques to produce a range of textile items that are displayed and sold, receiving positive feedback from local residents. The initiative has reduced pressure on NMMC’s solid waste system while creating sustainable employment for women.

NMMC Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde said the project reflects the corporation’s commitment to innovative waste management that benefits both the environment and the community. He added that strong public support and the empowerment of local women highlight the project’s positive impact.
