The folks at design firm Studio Siem & Pabon have put together a carpet called the Fervent Carpet which has been designed specifically for asthmatics in mind. The designers conducted research into the effect of textiles on the domestic environment and found that asthmatic people can sometimes struggle to live with upholstered home furnishings.
The carpet has been specially designed and is made from a textile-covered hose, arranged to make it look artsy. It’s not a regular carpet. It’s a carpet that connects to your radiator via a pipe, and from there it will heat up to 140 degrees Fahrenheit which effectively kills dust mites that might be hiding in it.
One of the common triggers of asthma is dust mites. Dust mites are typically found in objects with textiles on them, such as soft toys, beds, beddings, and carpets, so if you have a child with asthma or if you’re an asthmatic, chances are you would want to get rid of these potential triggers in your home.
They chose a radiator because in Europe, radiators are commonly found in homes. They decided to use the radiator because it’s a heating system already, so that was a logical step.
It’s an interesting idea and a good start but using carpet outside of Europe might not be so practical.
