Spinnova and Suzano accelerate wood-based fiber production

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2024-02-02 16:44:34 – Finland

Finnish fibre producer Spinnova, in collaboration with strategic partner Suzano, is scaling up production after successful tests on Suzano's eucalyptus-based micro-fibrillated cellulose (MFC) raw material specifications. The wood-based fibers will be rolled out later this year. The Woodspin facility, initially announced in May as Suzano's first industrial operation outside Brazil, is making progress.

Woodspin's first factory is expected to have limited initial production volumes, producing 1,000 tons of sustainable, recyclable, and fully biodegradable textile fiber annually from responsibly-grown eucalyptus trees, which are exclusively sourced exclusively from Suzano are utilized for the production. Both the organizations are actively working on improving overall production efficiency, focusing on reducing operating expenses and capital expenditures.

Suzano's executive director of new business, Christian Orglmeister, highlights the significantly lower environmental impact of eucalyptus pulp compared to alternative fibres like cotton, providing a genuinely scalable solution for sustainable production.

Spinnova's CEO, Tuomas Oijala, expressed satisfaction with Suzano's MFC raw material milestones. The company aims to finalize fiber and textile material development for deliveries from Woodspin using Suzano's MFC in the coming months.
