The Scandinavian Outdoor Group (SOG) is urging that all members make climate pledges in accordance with the limit 1.5 degree Celsius global warming objectives for 2022.

The Scandinavian Outdoor Group (SOG) annual conference in 2022 unanimously decided that a climate commitment in accordance with the Paris agreement will be required of all SOG members.

SOG said that the current IPCC assessment makes it brutally clear: the world has to halve greenhouse gas emissions in only 7.5 years to have a chance of staying below 1.5 degrees Celsius global warming, then half again in 2040 to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. If these objectives are not met, the repercussions for civilisation will range from severe to catastrophic, depending on how near the tipping points are to being reached.

Commitments will be made through UNFCCC Race to Zero partner activities by the end of 2022, and SOG will provide direction to its members as well as practical assistance in meeting climate commitment targets.

Race to Zero is the UNFCCC's global leadership effort to build support for a 1.5 degree Celsius future. It generates momentum by bringing together internationally leading climate projects and networks, according to SOG, who adds that by participating in one of these initiatives, members will work on the same climate agenda as global leaders from other industries.

David Nordblad, secretary-general SOG, said that this is a significant step forward for SOG and our members, placing Scandinavia and our outdoor brands on the map for what is vital for their future. They don't want to merely follow, but to lead the path forward, ensuring that the earth is secure for future generations.

Maria Frykman, chair of the SOG board, said that sustainability is at the top of SOG's agenda. By unanimously voting for a climate commitment at their recent annual meeting, SOG members are strongly dedicated to aligning their climate ambitions with the UN 2050 climate promise. By making this crucial commitment, they can work together as a team to standardize and transparently implement their sustainability activities inside the SOG group. With a clear specified framework, it will also be easier for SOG as a group and organization to help its members.
