The Secondary Materials and Recycled Textiles Association (SMART) is urging local officials across the United States to support and promote the responsible use of clothing collection bins to help reduce the growing issue of textile waste.
Clothing collection bins play a key role in extending the lifespan of textiles by keeping them out of landfills. They also contribute to the circular economy and can positively impact local economies by creating jobs and supporting community initiatives.
The call from SMART comes as more governments worldwide are introducing policies such as Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) programmes to address textile waste. In the US, California has already adopted EPR laws requiring large-scale take-back systems for used clothing and textiles.
In the meantime, SMART is encouraging local governments to adopt fair and practical policies that promote collaboration with bin operators. The association warns that high fees, strict placement rules, and other administrative challenges may discourage operators from offering this important service.
SMART is calling on local leaders to recognise the importance of clothing collection bins in reducing textile waste. By encouraging their proper use, communities can support environmental sustainability, drive economic development, and strengthen local initiatives.
