Sanuk launches SustainableSole collection featuring recycled materials

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2020-11-27 12:22:06 – USA

A division of Deckers Brands, Sanuk has announced the launch of its latest eco-friendly innovation, ‘SustainableSole’ collection. The initial collection for the sustainable line was launched in July however, the second collection contains 55% recycled material by weight.

The new launch is a testimony to the brand’s dedication towards marking a significant milestone as it continues to innovate and create more sustainable footwear. The new collection, SustainSole comprises all-vegan components and is available the women's slip-on Donna style, as well as the men's slip-on Sanuk style. Both the collections retail for $65.

Sanuk has partnered with BLUMAKA to launch SustainaSole, in order to deviate foam waste and transform it into quality, comfortable and sustainable shoes. The collaboration is an attempt to addressing the footwear industry's heavy, waste-generating reliance on virgin foams. Instead of sending the foam scrap to the landfill during the manufacturing process, the company and BLUMAKA managed to grind them into smaller pieces and use it to create a cushy, durable filler for shoe soles. The uppers of the shoes are made with 100% Recycled GRS Certified Fibers that include recycled PET fibres, recycled cotton fibres and recycled polyester fibres.

The new collection features undyed uppers, which is an intentional decision to conserve water and energy. The undyed uppers have so far conserved over 200,000 total gallons of water. 15 gallons per men's Skuner model and 76 gallons per women's Donna model. By overlooking the dying process, Sanuk has reduced greenhouse gas impact by nearly three pounds per men's Skuner model and nearly two pounds per women's Donna model. Both the styles are machine washable so consumers can extend the life of their eco-minded footwear. The company is continuously dedicated to designing long-lasting and comfortable footwear that positively contributes to the fashion industry's environmental footprint.

The company has been dedicated to acquiring new materials and processes to create more sustainable products. Erik Ecklund, the General Manager at Sanuk, stated that the shoes marked a big step forward in their journey and in the footwear industry toward sustainable innovation. The company ensures that the collection gives a stylish new life to things that would otherwise be discarded.

Sanuk has vouched to lighten their environmental footprint by utilising sustainable hemp, sustainable leather and other recycled materials that are in line with Deckers Brands' commitment to creating a better future.
