Portuguese textile manufacturer Riopele has developed a new fluorocarbon-free finish that provides long-lasting water repellency without using the long-chain PFC chemicals traditionally found in protective fabrics.

The new FCF (Fluoro Carbon Free) finish uses a modified resin formulation to repel water and other water-based liquids. According to Riopele, the treatment is designed to maintain its effectiveness even after repeated washing.

Riopele said durability was a key focus during the development process, both in maintaining fabric performance and in potentially extending the useful life of garments.

The company also said the finish could make treated garments easier to care for and potentially reduce how often they need to be washed, while helping them retain their protective properties over time.
