Request for setting up Textile Park by labour union

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2014-01-14 10:30:00 – Puducherry

Pondicherry Textile Mills Labour Union affiliated with the AITUC union is pushing the government to take steps to set up a textile park in the Union Territory. The union has taken up a resolution to this effect at its meeting held here on Sunday.

During the meeting, it was discussed that the three textile mills -- Bharathi Mills, Swadeshi Mills and AFT Mills, situated within a distance of nearly one and half kilometres, to be converted into a textile park which will provide jobs for about 10,000 women. The meeting noted the four textile parks, set up in Tamil Nadu, had provided jobs for nearly one lakh people. The union also welcomed the AFT mill management’s decision to resume functioning of the mill in February.

The representatives of the union also put up a request before the government to buy cloth for uniforms, bed sheets for hospitals, from the mill. It also resolved to request the union government to buy materials for stitching army uniforms and parachutes from the mill.

Also the dyeing units of the existing mill may be used by obtaining orders from neighbouring Tamil Nadu units which are closed following environmental pollution complaints.

Setting up textile park will bring jobs to many .
