Repreve LCA presents climate impact of polyester

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2023-07-27 17:14:41 – USA

Repreve-maker Unifi recently announced the results of a peer-reviewed Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) regarding the consequences of recycled polyester versus virgin polyester on climate change.

Repreve, Unifi’s recycled polyester brand, is made from pre-consumer waste materials and post-consumer plastic bottles. It contains the tracer technology FiberPrint and has a U Trust certification. Till now, more than 35 billion plastic bottles have been successfully converted by Repreve into recycled performance fiber that is used by brands like Ikea, Inditex, and PVH.

The peer-reviewed LCA verified that Repreve lowers climate change impact. It compared virgin polyester with Repreve and tested it for different parameters.

The new study focused on a variety of products (Repreve PC DTY, Repreve Hybrid DTY, Repreve PC Staple Fiber) and global supply chains unlike the older one which only dealt with Repreve DTY (drawn textured yarn).

The findings proved that Repreve highly reduces climate impacts, greenhouse emissions, and water scarcity in comparison to virgin polyester.
