Qore begins large-scale production of QIRA

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2025-07-11 16:23:19 – USA

Qore, a joint venture between Cargill and HELM, has officially started production of QIRA, the world’s first large-scale bio-based BDO (1,4-butanediol) made from locally grown dent corn. Sourced from renewable crops, QIRA offers a powerful, eco-friendly alternative to fossil-based chemicals commonly used in the production of consumer goods.

The new facility will produce 66,000 metric tons of QIRA annually, primarily using corn harvested within a 100-mile radius. As the largest operation of its kind globally, the plant represents a major step toward scaling sustainable materials for everyday use.

“Our joint expertise allows us to deliver dependable, renewable feedstock to manufacturers worldwide,” said Jon Veldhouse, CEO of Qore. “QIRA not only reduces dependence on imported materials but also brings consistency, sustainability, and greater transparency to global supply chains.”

Iowa farmers growing dent corn for QIRA use regenerative agriculture methods that help restore soil health and promote sustainable land stewardship. Sourcing feedstock locally improves traceability and accountability throughout the supply chain, enhancing both environmental and social responsibility.

In the fashion and footwear sectors, QIRA enables more sustainable textile and apparel production by offering transparency and lowering environmental footprints.
