PhilFIDA revives sericulture tradition with Claveria silk project

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2023-08-14 17:10:48 – Philippines

The Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA) is working to bring back the traditional art of sericulture in the Philippines and help the craft in Cagayan thrive. The silk here is used to make different kinds of clothes like the Barong Tagalog and other high-quality silk products.

PhilFIDA started the Claveria Silk Project, which costs about P3.1 million. This project is meant to develop a piece of land that is two hectares big and also create a place for teaching sericulture in Barangay Culao in Claveria, Cagayan.

Last month, the project gave control of mulberry farms, places for raising silkworms, a center to process cocoons, and a center to make silk cloth to the local government of Claveria.

The project wants to help 66 farmers who work with sericulture. This will make their community better and also keep the traditional craft alive.

PhilFIDA mentioned that the Claveria Silk Project shows how strong and creative the local community is. They said that by using methods that don't harm the environment and by making sericulture a special product of the region, Claveria wants to become a center for making silk. This could bring in tourists from both the local area and other countries.

At the same time, PhilFIDA is also working on projects to grow abaca in Claveria. This will help the region's economy and also take care of the environment.
