Ontex Group, a global manufacturer of absorbent hygiene products (AHPs) based in Aalst, Belgium, has begun using bio-based superabsorbent polymers (bioSAP) in its diaper range. The rollout is starting with select products.
This new material replaces conventional fossil-based SAP in the core of the diaper, helping to reduce the product’s carbon footprint while still delivering the same level of absorbency and performance.
“Progress must balance environmental goals with practical solutions,” said Annick De Poorter, Chief Innovation and Sustainability Officer at Ontex. “That means moving quickly where we can, while ensuring products remain affordable and inherently more sustainable.”
Traditional SAP is currently neither recyclable nor industrially compostable, but Ontex sees biodegradable SAP as a promising solution for future circular systems. The company is closely following developments in this area, while acknowledging the limitations of current technology.
“Consumers want sustainable products that don’t compromise on comfort, performance, or price,” said Laurent Nielly, President of Ontex Europe. “By introducing bioSAP now, we are preparing for future advancements. We invite our partners to join us in scaling sustainable materials like bioSAP to meet evolving market needs and promote long-term responsible growth.”
