Swiss performance sportswear brand, On, has developed a method for creating shoes out of carbon emissions. On introduces Cloudprime, a sneaker built from CleanCloud EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) foam, in collaboration with IT firm Technip Energies, chemical business LanzaTech, and plastic solutions supplier Borealis.
On’s initiatives to transition away from fossil fuels and employ alternative materials to produce high-performance sporting goods include Cloudprime. As a result, the midsole of a shoe made by the Swiss business will be the first in the footwear industry to employ carbon emissions as the main raw material.
Caspar Coppetti, On’s co-founder and executive co-chairman, said that holding the first sneaker ever created from carbon emissions in his hands is a major accomplishment for On and the sports industry as a whole. This scarcely existed five years ago. Imagine what may happen in the future when we harness the potential of alternative carbon sources with additional research and in partnership with the greatest partners.
The Swiss business has set a goal for every On product to be totally circular and devoid of fossil fuels. Finding the ideal partners was the first step in a five-year process that ultimately led to the creation of CleanCloud. The obstacles of building this complicated technology at a rapid pace must be overcome, and this collaborative approach is essential.
Before it is discharged into the atmosphere, carbon monoxide from industrial sources like steel mills is captured using LanzaTech’s technology. Then, these emissions go through a unique fermentation process. The carbon-rich gas ferments spontaneously and is transformed into ethanol thanks to specifically chosen and naturally occurring microorganisms. This natural fermentation process is comparable to how alcohol is often made, such as when making beer.
Technip Energies then dehydrates the ethanol to create ethylene, which Borealis then polymerizes to create EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate), which is ultimately packaged as solid plastic pellets. Additionally, On is able to start manufacturing a high-performance foam for footwear using this adaptable and lightweight material.
LanzaTech creates chemicals using a technique that absorbs carbon waste rather than expels it by combining cutting-edge genetic engineering, cutting-edge biotechnology, artificial intelligence, and advancements in mechanical and chemical engineering.
Jennifer Holmgren, CEO of LanzaTech, said that today they continue their path to demonstrate the world that recovered carbon is a resource rather than a burden. They will need to remove less carbon from the earth as they progressively incorporate pollution into the goods we consume on a daily basis. They will be able to bend the carbon curve, maintain clear skies, and build a sustainable future for everybody thanks to the cooperation between On, Borealis, Technip, and LanzaTech.
While Borealis is crucial in the creation of simple-to-process EVA foam for CleanCloud, Technip Energies is in charge of the energy transition and the process of converting liquid ethanol into the gas ethylene, which is a monomer and the primary component of commonly used plastics.
