Nikwax, Gill Marine introduce water-tepellent technology for ocean gear

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2026-02-27 13:53:27 – United Kingdom

Nikwax has partnered with technical marine clothing brand Gill Marine to introduce PFAS-free durable water-repellent technology to ocean performance gear. The collaboration brings a more environmentally responsible finish to high-performance marine apparel.

Gill has incorporated Nikwax’s factory-applied Direct.Dry DWR into its updated OS1 Ocean System. This marks the first time the Direct.Dry treatment has been used in marine clothing. With this addition, Gill’s leading offshore collection now features a PFAS-free water-repellent finish designed for demanding sea conditions.

Direct.Dry achieves the highest rating in the AATCC 22 spray test, which measures water repellency. The finish is developed to remain effective even after repeated washing. In addition, garments treated with Direct.Dry can be refreshed using Nikwax’s aftercare products, helping extend the life of the clothing.

Gill describes the OS1 Ocean System as its most technically advanced offshore range so far. The brand stated that the development process included internal laboratory testing along with more than 5,000 miles of Arctic sailing trials carried out by Matt and Amy Humphreys from the YouTube channel Sailing Yacht Florence.
