Nike is stepping into the field of “mind science” with a new line of footwear designed to enhance body awareness. The company says its new products, the Mind 001 and Mind 002, use neuroscience to help wearers connect more deeply with their bodies. The Mind collection is the first project from Nike’s new Mind Science Department within its Sport Research Lab.
Nike’s latest creations, the Mind 001 mule and the Mind 002 sneaker, feature 22 individual foam pods on each shoe, placed on a flexible and water-resistant base. According to Nike, these elements move naturally with the wearer’s steps and provide gentle sensory feedback meant to “activate key areas” of the brain, helping users feel more aware and connected to their movements.
Dr. Matthew Nurse, Nike’s vice president and chief science officer, explained: “For 45 years, Nike has studied how the body moves, from muscle function to oxygen use. Now we’re exploring the mind. By understanding perception, focus, and sensory response, we’re uncovering new ways to connect the brain and body. It’s not just about performance anymore, it’s about being more present, focused, and resilient. That’s the future of performance.”
