Neiman Marcus to become fur-free by early 2023

US department store chain, Neiman Marcus Group (NMG) is the latest store to pledge to stop selling any products containing animal fur by early 2023.

The announcement also applies to Bergdorf Goodman locations, which are part of the Neiman Marcus Group (NMG), and will result in the closure of 22 ‘fur salons’ and converting them into venues for “contemporary luxury experiences.

The new policy comes after the business announced in April that it had formed an Environment, Social Governance, and Governance (ESG) team to help it achieve its sustainability goals.

NMG CEO Geoffroy van Raemdonck said that they’re offering an ultimate luxury experience for their consumers and their growing demands. They’re revamping their collection to include a variety of sustainable and ethical luxury apparel categories. The future is clearly fur-free, and this includes the ultra-luxury market. NMG has the chance to help shape the future of their industry as a leader in luxury retail. They’re grateful to the Humane Society of the US for their collaboration.

The decision comes after the recent formation of a dedicated team tasked with identifying, improving, and disclosing performance on material Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) issues, such as animal welfare. The statement comes as other high-end fashion houses and shops make similar pledges.

The organization collaborated on the approach with the Humane Society of the United States as part of its Animal Welfare Policy.

Director of fashion policy for the Humane Society of the United States, PJ Smith, said they applaud Neiman Marcus Group’s crucial policy. The company’s fur-free promise is a game-changer in the retail industry, and they commend NMG for making headway on a subject that so many people care about.
