NCTO welcomes US plan to address unfair trade practices

The National Council of Textile Organizations (NCTO) expresses approval for the US Administration’s initiative to combat “unfair trade practices,” which it believes contributed to the closure of eight production plants in the last three months. NCTO looks forward to actively collaborating with the US administration to refine the plan, ensuring it effectively addresses critical objectives related to enforcement and deterrence of Uyghur forced labor and the de minimis loophole.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) collaborates with various agencies and the private sector to expand the UFPLA Entity List, aiming to hold companies accountable. Secretary of US Homeland Security Alejandro N Majorkas commits to a 30-day action plan to address unfair trade practices and ensure the longevity of the country’s domestic textile sector Majorkas requests agencies to provide a comprehensive enforcement plan in the next 30 days, exploring whether existing trade laws offer adequate authorities to address root causes.

Kim Glas, NCTO president and CEO, appreciates the meeting with DHS Secretary Mayorkas, emphasizing the urgent economic challenges faced by the textile industry. She notes the industry’s recent losses and highlights the impact of demand destruction exacerbated by unfair trade practices.

NCTO, along with the Coalition for a Prosperous America and Alliance for American Manufacturing, supports the House China Select Committee’s call for the US DHS to crack down on unfair trade practices facilitating the importation of products made with forced labor.

The House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the US and the Chinese Communist Party urges DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to take immediate action to strengthen UFLPA enforcement, reinforcing the commitment to addressing unfair trade practices.
