MycoWorks successfully produces leather-alternative material

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2024-01-09 16:31:07 – USA

MycoWorks, a biotechnology company, announced successful production of 1,000 sheets of their innovative fine mycelium biomaterial at their South Carolina plant. These sheets are on their way to partner tanneries in Europe, where they will be transformed into various products, including MycoWorks' flagship material Reishi.

According to MycoWorks, the quality of the fine mycelium sheets from the South Carolina plant has surpassed the standards set by their California pilot plant. The company credits this achievement to years of learning from quality and scale-up processes. The success highlights three years of research and development, enabling quick scalability. MycoWorks emphasizes that their unique tray-based process can be executed virtually anywhere.

Doug Hardesty, the Chief Operating Officer at MycoWorks, expressed pride in the company's achievements in 2023. Notably, they marked the start of commercial-scale mycelium biomaterial production in South Carolina. The plant's new systems and process automation led to the successful harvest of high-quality fine mycelium sheets.

He further added, “Our teams redesigned and scaled up our one-of-a-kind tray-based process to achieve low cost and high quality production all while delivering Fine Mycelium to the market ahead of schedule, only 17 months after breaking ground. MycoWorks South Carolina is a remarkable achievement, now delivering the quality from craftsmanship via a scalable tray.”
