Most potential sectors are Smart and Lifestyle Functional Textiles

Sean Tsai, Overseas Market Development, Taiwan Textile Federation shared his views on technical textiles going ahead with Nitin Madkaikar-Business Head (YnFx) at the Taiwan Pavilion, Technotex India Exhibition held in Mumbai on 21-23 April 2016. The event was organized by Ministry of Textiles and FICCI.

Nitin Madkaikar: What are your views on Indian technical textile industry in India?
Sean Tsai: In terms of technical textile, Majority is doing packing textile and shoe textile. Export market can accept a little higher price, domestic is lower. However, we do feel buyer can accept higher and higher class of technical textiles every year. In terms of composite, since we just started the journey since last year, we don’t know much about the market, looking forward to find out.

NM: What is India’s competitive level across markets and what need to be done to achieve that level?
TS: India’s competitive strength is the labor force and textile background. From material to end use production line is there, but all needs to upgrade. We’ve found many companies from downstream industry are already caught up with global trends.

NM: What is the latest development in Taiwan technical textiles relating to production, machinery accessory?
TS: Technical Yarns: Nylon 6/66, it enables Indian mills to development high class clothing, in terms of high strength, hand feel and etc.
Shoe / bag / luggage materials including fabrics, TPU and accessories.
Non woven: high quality non woven fabric will support Indian industry to develop high level of non-woven products: diaper, sanitary napkin and etc.
Composites are break into fiberglass fabrics, FRP and Technology/equipment.

NM: Which the largest segment in technical textiles usage globally? What is its potential?
TS: The most potential sector is smart textile. It is expected to take off this year. Many technologies are ready for year.

NM: What kind of demand forecast do you foresee among major technical textiles segments?
TS: In terms of India Market,
– Due to awareness of health raise, lifestyle functional textile will become trends for domestic market.
– Like what happen of global trend, Indian car manufactory standards is expected to be reset at a high level for being more eco friendly. For example, standards for air bags, interior textiles and etc. This will create huge needs for technical textiles and lots new materials.
