Explorer Mike Horn has formed a new technical partnership with Woolmark for his multi-year “What’s Left” expedition, which will take him from the Arctic to the Amazon and Patagonia. The journey aims to document some of the world’s toughest and fastest-changing environments. This collaboration brings together Horn’s long exploration experience and Woolmark’s fibre science knowledge to test Merino wool in real-life extreme conditions.

The goal of the partnership is to show how natural materials can meet the high technical needs of performance expeditions while reducing the use of synthetic fibers. Merino wool, which is biodegradable, renewable and naturally high performing, is central to this effort. Its natural temperature control, moisture-wicking ability and odour resistance have supported Horn throughout many of his past challenges.

Working with Woolmark and French technical apparel brand AYAQ, Horn will conduct a detailed wear-testing programme during different phases of his journey. Clothing such as base layers and wind- and water-resistant outer shells will be tested in the Arctic, the Amazon and Patagonia. The results will help advance the development of responsible performance textiles that can endure intense environmental demands.

Horn says that wool has always been essential in his achievements, as its natural technical qualities have supported him throughout his career. This partnership begins a wider project focused on testing, learning and creating gear that offers extreme performance with lower environmental impact.
