Mercedes-Benz AG has launched Tomorrow XX, a new programme designed to accelerate decarbonisation, responsible resource use and circularity across the entire lifecycle of its vehicles. As part of the initiative, the automotive group is exploring the use of Labfiber, an advanced leather alternative marketed as Innovera, for future vehicle interiors.
The move builds on Mercedes-Benz’s existing collaboration with biomaterials company Modern Meadow, which previously showcased Innovera in the Concept AMG GT XX. That debut marked a significant step in introducing next-generation materials into high-performance automotive design. With Tomorrow XX, Mercedes-Benz is now extending this exploration, integrating material innovation from the earliest design stages through to end-of-life considerations.
Innovera is made using a combination of plant-based proteins, biopolymers and recycled rubber, resulting in more than 80% renewable carbon content. The material is designed to integrate into industry-standard manufacturing processes and is available in a wide range of colours, textures and finishes. According to Modern Meadow, it is lightweight and twice as strong as traditional leather.
Together, Mercedes-Benz’s Tomorrow XX programme and Bellroy’s product launch signal growing momentum for high-performance, low-impact material alternatives across both automotive and lifestyle sectors.
