McDonald’s introduces biodegradable crew uniforms

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2024-02-01 11:06:19 – USA

In a significant stride toward sustainability, McDonald’s has unveiled its commitment to invest in environmentally friendly team uniforms. The upcoming crew uniforms will integrate CiClo technology, a groundbreaking innovation enabling synthetic materials, such as polyester, to biodegrade at rates comparable to natural fibers like wool.

While polyester has long been favored by fast-food establishments for its durability and washability in team uniforms, its downside lies in shedding plastic microfibers during production and washing. These microfibers contribute to the vast amount of microplastic particles, estimated at 358 trillion, circulating in oceans and ecosystems.

The introduction of CiClo technology marks a game-changer in uniform sustainability. This patented textile ingredient, combined with traditional polyester, activates when exposed to microbes and water over an extended period. This ensures the uniform's durability during use while presenting a more environmentally friendly profile over time. The new fabric is now available across all U.S. McDonald’s restaurants, featuring the classic denim uniforms.
