Marimekko releases capsule collection made of Spinnova fibre

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2022-09-05 06:40:00 – Finland

Marimekko and Finnish sustainable textile material company Spinnova, have launched a capsule collection that contains the first ever commercially available printed products made using responsible SPINNOVA® fiber.

The groundbreaking technology of Spinnova and the printing art of Marimekko are combined in the capsule collection. The range is a step toward Marimekko's goal of creating timeless, environmentally friendly items in the future that adhere to the circular economy's guiding principles. The capsule features the renowned Unikko (poppy) pattern by Maija Isola from 1964 on a sophisticated utility overshirt with a denim-inspired design, a pair of pants, and a tote bag.

This capsule is one of the first commercially accessible printed goods manufactured with the SPINNOVA® fiber combination. About 20% of the denim-like fabric combination is made of SPINNOVA® fiber. The remaining percentage of the mixture is cotton, of which around 70% is organic cotton. Innovative textile fiber from Spinnova is comprised of certified wood from sustainably managed forests and is completely recyclable. In comparison to ordinary cotton, the manufacture of SPINNOVA® fiber uses 99.9% less water, according to a Spinnova research. Spinnova produces their fiber without the use of any hazardous chemicals.

Suvi-Elina Enqvist, Head of Innovation Works at Marimekko, said that the truly close working connection between both businesses has been essential to the success of this partnership. They are happy to unveil the work's results: the Marimekko and Spinnova capsule collection, which includes the first-ever printed items made of SPINNOVA® fiber to be sold in stores. The same ambition to address the environmental effects of the fashion and textile industries has driven them both throughout this journey. The redesigned capsule is a step in the right direction for them. The foundation of Marimekko's design ethos is the creation of eternal art that will delight future generations. Due to Spinnova's potential for sustainability, partnering with it was an obvious decision, and relationships with companies like Spinnova are essential to reaching our ambitious sustainability goals.

Kim Poulsen, CEO at Spinnova, said that Marimekko was one of the first clothing companies to collaborate with Spinnova, and the two of us have traveled a great distance together. The debut of this capsule collection is a significant turning point in the partnership between these two important figures in the expanding and impact-growing Finnish textile sector. The first printed items manufactured using SPINNOVA® fiber are now available for purchase, and even more thrilling is the fact that the fabric is printed with one of the most recognizable patterns in all of design history.

Since 2017, Spinnova and Marimekko have worked together to test, create, and market novel fabrics made of SPINNOVA® fiber. The brands exhibited two prototype costumes in February 2020 and stated their intention to release a commercially viable product by 2022. The partnership was acknowledged as a finalist in the Fast Company 2020 Innovation by Design Awards' Sustainability category. Additionally, the partnership was given an honorable mention in the Experimental division. One of the most coveted design prizes in the field, Innovation by Design is the only one that recognizes original work at the nexus of design, business, and innovation. The prizes honor individuals, groups, and businesses that use design to solve issues.
