The new handloom textile training centre was implemented with concept of Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa and under the guidance of Mrs. Pushpa Rajapaksa, Chairperson of Liya Abhiman organization.

The Pakistani Government provided all assistance to the project to revive the traditional handloom industry in Sri Lanka. Handloom Textile initiated under the guidance of Liya Abhiman organization. During the opening of the center in February this year, handlooms and other equipments procured with Pakistan’s assistance were distributed among 70 handloom operators with each operator getting items worth nearly Sri Lankan Rs. 100,000.

Sri Lankan handloom industry is a labor intensive cottage industry and it plays an important role in providing employment opportunities for people in Meerigama- Kottala areas and Divulapitya-Madampella. However, handloom entrepreneurs in these areas were facing various problems leading to a decrease in their incomes.

Last week, Mrs. Pushpa Rajapaksa, Attorney-at-Law and Chairperson of the Liya Abhiman Organization, inspected the functioning of the handloom center established earlier this year in Kottala, Mirigama in the western province of Sri Lanka.

The Liya Abhiman organization is now playing a catalytic role in modernization of handloom sector in Gampaha district through skill up-grading of weavers by providing modernized looms, training courses as well as other necessary equipments and technological assistance, for artisans to develop new designs and market their products.
