Lenzing Group boosts sustainable viscose fiber production

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2023-09-27 13:56:58 – Austria

Lenzing Group, a leading fiber producer, plans to increase the production of their sustainable viscose fibers in the Asia-Pacific region. These fibers, known as LENZING™ ECOVERO™ and VEOCEL™, are EU Ecolabel certified and produced in Lenzing’s Indonesian site, PT. South Pacific Viscose. This expansion aims to meet the rising demand for environmentally friendly textile and nonwoven products in the region.

The conversion of the Purwakarta site in Indonesia, where these fibers are produced, has resulted in reduced sulfur emissions, lower annual CO2 footprint, and expected wastewater reduction. Lenzing Group is devoted to making the industries they operate in more sustainable and transforming the textile business model towards circularity. They see significant growth potential in Asia, particularly in the demand for environmentally friendly fibers.

Lenzing's Purwakarta site, strategically located in Asia-Pacific, allows for efficient transportation of responsible viscose fibers to value chain partners, reducing the overall carbon footprint of the textile supply chain. These fibers are produced using up to 50% less fossil energy and water compared to generic viscose, making them a sustainable choice.

LENZING ECOVERO branded viscose fibers have been widely used in various fashion products, including tops, dresses, t-shirts, and loungewear, by global fashion labels like M&S, H&M, and Levi’s. The increased production in the Purwakarta site will not only allow closer collaboration with existing customers but also introduce more prospects in the region to responsible viscose.

Lenzing aims to further enhance their offerings by introducing LENZING ECOVERO Black specialty fibers, which significantly reduce water and energy usage in fabric dyeing. This aligns with their sustainability goals of reducing CO2 emissions per ton of product by 50% by 2030 and achieving CO2-neutral production by 2050. The conversion to geothermal-based energy at the site has played a crucial role in achieving these goals.
