H&M to withdraw operations in Myanmar due to worker rights concerns

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2023-08-18 16:42:43 – Myanmar

H&M has made a decision to slowly stop working in Myanmar. They thought about it carefully. H&M said, "While we do this, we will keep talking to the people involved in our company as part of our careful checking process. We have been watching what's happening in Myanmar very closely. We see that it's becoming harder to do our work the way we want to."

Just a few days ago, H&M said they were worried about how workers in Myanmar were being treated. This was happening in the factories where clothes are made.

H&M started looking into these worries. This happened after a group called Business & Human Rights Resource Centre said that they found 212 times where workers' rights were not respected. This affected at least 108,000 workers who make clothes.

The workers are facing problems with their rights as they work for at least 46 fashion brands and shops around the world. A group that cares about people's rights says that the number of problems has gone up a lot. From February 2021 to February 2022, there were 56 problems. But in the next year, there were 156 problems.

H&M is looking at all the problems that the group talked about in their report. If something needs to be fixed, H&M's local team will work on it with the help of other important people.

H&M is worried about what's happening in Myanmar. They say it's getting harder to work there while still following their rules. They are watching the situation carefully and talking to important people from Myanmar and other places.
