Ganesha Ecosphere to enhance traceability of recycled polyester supply chain

India’s largest recycled polyester (rPET) fiber producer, Ganesha Ecosphere Ltd, has partnered with traceability solutions specialist Applied DNA Sciences Inc. (ADNAS) to use its polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based DNA manufacturing and nucleic acid-based technologies.

Ganesha will deploy the CertainT® platform, Applied DNA’s traceability system, to tag an initial pilot production of recycled polyester (rPET) at Ganesha’s facilities in India and conduct confirmatory samples testing at Applied DNA’s laboratories in India and the U.S. The partnership between the two firms will give brands and textile producers a reliable solution to help them achieve their rPET sustainability goals and ensure the authenticity of raw materials at every level of the textile value chain.

Ganesha will be able to introduce and use CertainT-verified rPET to give raw material assurance to textile and garment customers under the terms of the agreement. Ganesha will also use Applied DNA’s recently released SigNature® T-100 tracer system, which allows the CertainT platform to quantify rPET source material in polyester blends.

SigNature T-100 is a  proprietary molecular-based tracer system that is used to identify, analyze, and verify rPET, polypropylene, acrylic, and maybe other man-made materials for claims of both identification and quantification of the raw material tagged and then spun into yarn for various textile products.

Mr. B.P. Sultania, Joint President of Ganesha Ecosphere Ltd., said that traceability has given the entire textile supply chain more authenticity and credibility, and it is now an important element of the recycling process. Their clients can now trust the original tagged synthetic fiber and validate product-related sustainability promises thanks to Applied DNA and CertainT.

Under the leadership and vision of Chairman Shri Shyam Sunder Sharmma, Ganesha has pioneered the creation of rPET fiber and rPET yarn from post-consumer PET bottle scrap since beginning the rPET business in 1994. With a total capacity of 118,800 metric tonnes per year, the company is India’s largest producer of rPET fiber, spun yarn, and colored filament.

Ganesha’s rPET products are used to make textiles like T-shirts and body warmers, as well as functional textiles like non-woven air filter fabric, geotextiles, carpets, and automobile upholstery, as well as fillings for pillows, duvets, and toys.

Dr. James A. Hayward, president, and CEO of Applied DNA Sciences,m said that CertainT gives brands and businesses a true strategic edge that is both sustainable and traceable. CertainT’s commercial scale-up and integration into customers’ supply chains is facilitated by their India and Asia-based support teams for recycled PET and other polymers.
