Gaia Biomaterials has received final European patent approval for its PLA-free film extrusion material developed for biodegradable and compostable applications. According to the company, the material is already being used in products such as produce bags, waste bags, and medical aprons.
Peter Stenström expressed satisfaction over the patent approval and highlighted the efforts of the company’s research and development team behind the innovation.
Unlike many traditional bioplastics that depend on polylactic acid (PLA), Gaia’s new formulation uses a blend of biodegradable polymers and minerals. The company stated that the material is designed to deliver compostable performance without depending on PLA, which is one of the most commonly used bioplastic raw materials.
