Freudenberg Performance Materials has made a major technological breakthrough with the introduction of its new 100% bio-based PLA/wood pulp materials, developed without the use of chemical binders. These innovative materials merge the strengths of both components to meet the needs of industries such as plant propagation, packaging, filtration, apparel, and healthcare.
The key innovation lies in combining the water absorption and biodegradability of wood pulp with the high strength and heat-sealability of PLA (polylactic acid). The result is a fully bio-based, binder-free material that delivers both performance and sustainability benefits.
This advancement is made possible through Freudenberg’s wetlaid process, which allows the blending of polymeric and non-polymeric materials, unlike the spunlaid technology used for conventional PLA nonwovens that rely only on polymeric inputs.
The new PLA-based wetlaid nonwovens can be used across multiple markets. The materials also have potential applications in apparel, for embroidery backings and interlinings, and in healthcare, where they can be used in wound dressings.
