Freudenberg Performance Materials has introduced an Eco-calculator to assist consumers in determining the suitability of Evolon textile solutions for bedding and bath towels.

The new Eco-calculator gives a comprehensive picture of the environmental impacts of Evolon solutions over their whole life cycle, from raw materials extraction to laundering and product disposal. There are eight environmental standards that are assessed, including carbon footprint, water impact, and eco-toxicity.

Independent external researchers completed a Life Cycle Assessment focused on clothing applications such as bed sheets, bath towels, and workwear used in hotels and hospitals, and presented and validated evidence for the method.

The Eco-calculator often takes data from washing tests into account when determining the fabric's durability and the amount of water, energy, and detergent it needs. The research software evaluated 12 different textile articles by simulating industrial wash cycles. Each substance was assessed in terms of the amount of water, energy, and detergent used in its treatment, as well as its appearance and mechanical properties after washing.

Evolon business manager, Jean-François Kerhault said that changing the weight of the materials, the types of finish, the number of washing cycles, or the country of use, for example, will help their customers decide the situations they want to test. He adds that using the Eco-calculator, Freudenberg experts have an economic and environmental assessment based on this information. This data will assist their clients in determining the environmental impact of their own finished goods. They will incorporate the details into their own eco-design strategy for products to address emerging industry demands for carbon footprint data.

Bedsheets, cover material for fiber-filled pillows and duvets, mite-proof encasings, and bath towels are said to be suitable for fabrics manufactured with Evolon technology and Evolon New Generation. Oeko-Tex 100 certification has been given to Evolon base fabrics, indicating that they are free of toxic substances and safe for interaction with baby skin.
