The district tourism Promotion council (DTPC) is working on the project which aims at not only boosting tourism in Malabar but revive the handloom industry in Kannur, the land of looms. As the project will be setting up the handloom village in Azhikode.
On implementation of the project, it will provide comprehensive benefits for the handloom industry, which is currently passing through a phase of crisis. The government order is expected in May after which the work will start.
Under this project, the front of all the houses in the handloom street will be redesigned to give a uniform look. Also the entire street will be paved with interlock bricks. However, the families will be provided the facility to work for which five crore of amount has been set aside in the state budget.
The weavers of Kannur has been facing a lot of problem and going through hardship. This handloom village project is intermingling of tourism and handloom industry which will give a facelift to the industry from the tourism perspective which will change the current scenario and also can held them financially in the long run as the weavers will also be provided the facility to sell their products from their home itself so that there will be no issue of the mediators and brokers.
As part of this project, a handloom museum will also be set up which will put on display the history of handloom industry in Kerala including the specimens of old looms to the modern ones. The museum will also have the facility to exhibit and sell the products, for which 40 cents of land in the project area has been offered by industrialist and exporter C Jayachandran
The handloom industry in Kannur going through a bad phase and the new generation people are diffident to enter to this field. This project by DTPC would be giving the handloom industry a new face and it will definitely attract more people to it thus benefiting the weaver community financially. The handloom village will be finally undergoing changes to be a reality.
The tourism department will also be arranging in a special bus for the tourists from Kannur to the street in Puthiyatheru.
