Dow has introduced Dowsil IE-5619 DWOR Emulsion, a silicone-organic hybrid textile finishing technology designed to provide durable water repellency and resistance to oil-based contaminants without relying on conventional fluorinated chemistry.
According to Dow, its third-generation silicone-organic hybrid technology addresses the challenge of achieving oil repellency without fluorinated finishes, offering protection against both water-based stains and a range of oily contaminants. The treatment is intended for natural, synthetic and blended fabrics, with performance requiring validation for individual material types and formulations.
The emulsion is designed to protect fabrics against contaminants such as cooking oil, motor oil and sebum, as well as coffee, wine and milk. Dow describes the formulation as a 30% solids concentrate that can be integrated into conventional textile finishing processes. Typical application levels range from 1–3% based on fabric weight, with curing times of one to three minutes at temperatures of at least 150°C. The company also says the treatment is designed to retain water and oil repellency after more than 20 domestic laundering cycles.
In addition to its repellent properties, Dowsil IE-5619 is designed to preserve fabric softness and breathability while allowing tapes and logos to adhere without additional surface treatments. Juan Carlos Medina, Global Strategic Marketing Director at Dow, said the technology provides a silicone-based alternative to fluorinated finishes while maintaining the performance and aesthetic qualities expected in textiles.
