DOST-PTRI expands natural fiber-based nonwovens

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2026-07-03 14:13:21 – Philippines

The Department of Science and Technology’s Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) has launched a new initiative to showcase nonwoven textiles made from locally sourced natural fibres as sustainable alternatives to synthetic plastics for industrial and commercial applications.

According to DOST-PTRI, the initiative aims to broaden the country's textile industry by promoting nonwoven materials that can be used across sectors including healthcare, construction, transportation, agriculture, furniture, fashion, and infrastructure.

Unlike conventional woven or knitted fabrics, nonwoven textiles are produced by directly bonding or interlocking fibres using mechanical, thermal, or chemical methods. This manufacturing process enables faster production while offering greater flexibility for a wide range of industrial uses.

DOST-PTRI stated that the nonwoven textiles featured under the initiative contain more than 75% natural textile fibres. This helps reduce dependence on petroleum-based plastics while encouraging more sustainable manufacturing practices.
