Candiani Denim, Lenzing partner on jackets from recycled geotextiles

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2024-03-26 16:49:09 – Austria

Italian denim mill Candiani Denim has partnered with eco-friendly fiber maker Lenzing to repurpose geotextiles used on glaciers into wearable garments. Geotextiles, akin to the fabric used in landscaping, shield snow and ice on glaciers from melting due to climate change. However, many of these fabrics contain fossil-based fibers, leading to microplastic pollution in water sources.

In response, Lenzing developed a geotextile made from cellulosic fibers, which naturally degrade and can be recycled. Building on this initiative, Lenzing and Candiani Denim collaborated to recycle fibers from the geotextiles into "Glacier Jackets." These jackets are created using recycled fibers, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional denim.

Simon Giuliani, of Candiani Denim, explained the process of weaving glacier waste yarn into denim fabric, which is then transformed into garments, ready for recycling multiple times.

The Glacier Jacket will debut at Salone de Mobile in Milan next month, showcasing Candiani Denim's micro-factory. Lenzing collaborated with Marchi & Fildi Spa and Blue of a Kind for this innovative project.

Florian Heubrandner, of Lenzing, emphasized the collaborative effort's significance in driving innovation and sustainability across the textile industry, aiming to combat climate change and promote environmental responsibility.
