Buy from local artisans Ministry of Textile requests

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2018-05-25 10:42:00 – India

Cabinet headed by PM Narendra Modi had approved Integrated Scheme for Development of Silk Industry earlier which will benefit the silk industry of the country. The Ministry of Textile has made a heartfelt request to all ministries, departments and public sector undertakings to buy their fabric requirements from the local artisans in the country. The request has been made to give “purchase preference” to the local products under the “Make in India” scheme.

The ministry has also asked the ministries to provide details about the quantity of content bought by them from the textile sector. Textile ministry contributes 2 percent to the GDP and 15 percent to the country’s export earnings. It gives employment to over 45 million people and is one of the biggest employers in the country.

The appeal seems to be in line with the order for government officials to fly state-owned Air India for official trips.

‘Make in India’ is a flagship programme of the government which seeks to promote the growth in manufacturing sector and generate employment in the country.
