BRAIN Biotech partners with AMSilk to partner on protein fibers

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2023-02-10 07:46:38 – Germany

BRAIN Biotech, a pioneer in the development and production of bio-based solutions and products for industry, and AMSilk, the first industrial supplier of innovative biomaterials for more sustainable applications in the textile, medical, and consumer goods industries, share the vision of building a better future through biotechnology. BRAIN Biotech and AMSilk are merging their expertise as part of a strategic partnership to further the development of high-performance fibers for the market for performance materials.

Products made from biomaterials have a great deal of potential as sustainable material alternatives in the future. The performance materials industry may undergo a transformation thanks to recent innovations like those being worked on by BRAIN Biotech and AMSilk. Polyethylene or polyamide, which are petroleum-based textile fibers, are well known for being a major source of microplastics and for contributing to the unsustainable disposal of used clothing in landfills.

AMSilk creates biotechnological materials that are completely recyclable, 100% biodegradable, and free of microplastics. These materials are based on renewable carbon structural proteins. These biomaterials are incredibly adaptable and thus particularly appealing for usage in a wide number of applications, including the fashion, medical, and automotive industries, among others, thanks to their remarkable mechanical and biochemical capabilities.

The Company is now utilizing BRAIN Biotech's expertise to broaden its protein technology platform to further markets and applications. Here, they want to better improve particular structural protein features for a variety of high-performance textile application domains.

Dr. Alexander Pelzer, Head of Research & Development at BRAIN Biotech’s Zwingenberg site, said that in this collaboration, their protein engineering experts are once again showcasing their capabilities in protein development, especially in particularly difficult tasks that call for novel approaches. Their sequence- and structure-driven design-based protein optimization methods have already shown their worth in numerous optimization procedures. To attain the desired qualities for higher-performance fibers, their enzyme technology unit will work closely with AMSilk to further develop these structural proteins.

Dr. Andreas Schmideder, Head of Business Opportunities & Development, said that the underlying structural proteins of AMSilk's biofabricated fibers have enormous promise. As a result, items can be customized to match certain market demands. In BRAIN Biotech, they think they have identified the ideal technical partner for growing their protein platform. The joint goal of AMSilk and BRAIN, to build a sustainable future through bio-based solutions, in particular, facilitates an inspirational and fruitful collaboration, in addition to BRAIN's great experience in protein creation.
