BioShoes4All project delivers new sustainable innovations

Portugal’s footwear industry has announced the successful completion of the four-year BioShoes4All project, which developed a wide range of scientific, technological, and industrial innovations for footwear manufacturing. The BioShoes4All initiative brought together 69 partners from different sectors, including design, biological resources, leather, polymers, composites, chemicals, machinery manufacturing, logistics, and waste recovery.

The project focused on five main areas. These included the development of bio-based leather, sustainable tanning materials, biomaterials and composite materials for footwear, eco-design and environmental footprint assessment, recycling technologies and circular economy models, traceability systems and advanced manufacturing technologies, as well as industry training, communication, and collaboration to strengthen the footwear sector.

Among the innovations developed are new biomaterials such as leather processed with plant-based extracts, chromium-free leather alternatives, bio-based footwear components, and textile materials made from olive stones and chestnut waste. The project also introduced environmentally friendly solutions, including mono-material footwear designed for easier recycling and processes that allow leather, rubber, polymer, and textile waste to be reused in the production of new products.

The project also achieved significant progress in manufacturing technology. Researchers and industry partners worked on smart factory solutions, artificial intelligence, machine vision, the Internet of Things (IoT), digital twins, robotics, intelligent material cutting, and advanced quality control systems. Overall, the project completed 46 research programs, developed more than 50 low-impact products, established 25 industrial pilot lines, created eight digital platforms, and launched seven industrial symbiosis initiatives.
