Ben Sherman reveals 1960s-informed Team GB official Olympic ceremony looks

British clothing brand Ben Sherman has unveiled the official costumes collection for Team GB athletes for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games opening and closing ceremonies have been announced by British apparel designer Ben Sherman.

The collection, which was showcased during London Fashion Week, is inspired by the attire of athletes who attended the 1964 Olympics, which were held in Tokyo.

Team GB Olympic medalists, medal hopes, and emerging stars, such as track and field star Morgan Lake, taekwondo athlete Lutalo Muhammad, and diver Jack Laugher, are captured in the team uniform that will be worn to commemorate the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in Rankin’s film.

Ben Sherman created a traditional Harrington jacket in blue with red and white union stripes on the sleeves for Team GB’s opening ceremony ensemble, which was combined with the brand’s white oxford button-down shirt and light putty-colored chinos.

Team GB will wear Ben Sherman blue chino shorts with a traditional white polo shirt with a printed Team GB lion’s head decoration on the left sleeve, as well as the official Tokyo 2020 emblem and Olympic Rings on the chest, during the closing ceremony.

Ben Sherman also made sure that sustainability and functionality were a priority in the design, focusing on comfortable, breathable, and anti-bacterial fabrics like organic cotton and eco-friendly bamboo viscose to create environmentally responsible pieces that allow each athlete to perform at their best. The Oxford shirts and chino pants were made of organic cotton certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard, while the socks were made of bamboo viscose.

Ben Sherman footwear will complete Team GB’s official opening and closing ceremony ensembles, with super-soft flyknit, wingtip accents, and an EVA sole for exceptional cushioning and shock absorption.

Senior vice president, fashion and lifestyle for Ben Sherman, Tim Reid, said it’s an incredible honor for Ben Sherman to bring Team GB’s strength and energy to life. This was reflected in every aspect of their engagement, including the capsule collaboration and the official Team GB uniform.

Tim added that they’re looking forward to seeing the athletes display their Olympic pride via these designs on the biggest platform possible at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, which begin on July 23 with the Opening Ceremony.

Chief executive of the British Olympic Association, Andy Anson, said the athletes are getting suited out and receiving a range of goods, including their opening and closing ceremony attire from Ben Sherman, which is an exciting time for them. The outfits prominently feature Ben Sherman’s ancestry and creatively express the essence of the Team GB Brand. They’re confident that the athletes would like the fit and design.

This is Ben Sherman’s second collaboration with Team GB; the British designer previously provided official tailoring for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.
