Belstaff partners with Blackhorse Lane to launch sustainable denim capsule

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2021-03-12 14:07:31 – United Kingdom

A sustainable denim capsule collection is launched by Belstaff in collaboration with Blackhorse Lane, a London-based atelier that manufactures selvedge and organic raw denim garments with a focus on sustainability.

The designing and manufacturing of the capsule is done with Belstaff’s brand ethos ‘Built for Life’ at the forefront and consists of jackets, denim jeans, for men and women, and a tote bag.

Blackhorse Lane Ateliers was founded by Han Ates in 2016 and is London’s only craft jeans maker. The denim collection is hand-made by the team by incorporating the unique designs of Belstaff such as co-branded buttons, copper rivets, cognac leather patches with dual branding, and natural herringbone internal waistbands.

Because of the only use of organic cotton and denim woven in Europe, the atelier has become known for its local and eco-conscious approach to denim to reduce the environmental impact of the creation of the raw materials.

Only 14oz Redline Selvedge denim from Isko has been used in the manufacturing of Belstaff x Blackhorse Lane collection as they use environmentally friendly production techniques and processes. Denim is milled very close to where it’s grown, hence the denim’s carbon footprint is also low.

Belstaff said that selvedge denim is one of the most hardwearing materials, but with a soft hand, hence by using it, the collection has been “built for life.” Selvedge denim ages very well hence taking on the “marks and whiskers of the owner and often getting better as the denim is worn in”.

To ensure the jeans last the test of time, the British heritage brand will also showcase the care instructions for this denim with the use of tutorials and information shared on social channels and online.

A classic trucker silhouette, men’s Union jacket, and the Union jean, a mid-rise, straight leg silhouette with a selvedge outside leg seam are included in the collection. The women’s Marilyn jacket adds a feminine fit by taking the trucker silhouette and the Marilyn jean is a high rise, tapered leg silhouette. Along with these, a unisex Union bag has also been added by Belstaff which includes a natural herringbone pocket with zip closure and a natural cotton webbing shoulder strap.

Talking about the collection, Belstaff’s creative director, Sean Lehnhardt-Moore said that they felt proud to work with Blackhorse Lane Ateliers in London to launch an exciting new range of selvedge denim. Tailoring innovation is combined with heritage construction with a focus on sustainability, style, and unmatched quality. They felt excited about this union and believed that their jeans, jackets, and bags were some of the best in class.

Founder of Blackhorse Lane Atelier, Han Ates said that the beginning of everything is craftsmanship. With Belstaff, they share an appreciation for heritage and respect for their communities. To carefully produce the collection by hand, they have to work with a smaller team that took over 7 months as the production slowed down last year during the lockdowns. This is something which they are a product of and are looking forward to continuing our work with Belstaff in the future.
