APR introduces lyocell to modernise Indonesia’s batik industry

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2026-02-18 14:27:41 – Indonesia

Asia Pacific Rayon (APR), a major manufacturer of sustainably produced man-made cellulosic fibres (MMCFs), is introducing lyocell to Indonesia’s batik sector. The initiative was launched at the ‘Samudra Awan’ event in Jakarta and presents lyocell as a high-performance alternative to conventional batik fabrics. The goal is to enhance both the technical quality and commercial value of batik textiles.

Komarudin Kudiya, founder of Rumah Batik Komar, said lyocell improves the production process because it absorbs dye quickly and requires less dye to achieve bright, high-lustre results. He added that the fibre’s strength and strong wax adhesion help artisans work more efficiently.

Lyocell offers several advantages. It has a higher moisture absorption rate than many commonly used batik fabrics, enabling better dye uptake. This results in sharper motifs and improved colour fastness, making the designs more durable. Beyond its performance benefits, lyocell’s breathability is also attracting consumers who want comfortable, premium ethnic wear suited to tropical climates.

Sachin Malik, Head of Commercial at APR, said the introduction of lyocell is a strategic step to provide batik artisans with materials that improve both aesthetic appeal and commercial potential. He added that the initiative could strengthen the local supply chain and boost the global competitiveness of Indonesian batik in the sustainable fashion market.
