San Francisco-based Allbirds has partnered with Blumaka, a company known for converting recycled foam, and Circ, a textile-to-textile recycling specialist, to introduce its new Remix footwear collection. In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the three collaborators are intercepting this waste stream to create two footwear models, the Runner NZ Remix and the Cruiser Remix.
These styles feature midsoles from Blumaka, made by reclaiming foam scraps from athletic footwear manufacturing, grinding and molding them into a high-performance recycled foam blend. This process consumes 99% less water and produces 65% fewer carbon emissions than traditional foam production, while also delivering enhanced durability, cushioning, and comfort.
Adding to this, Circ contributes through its hydrothermal recycling process, which extracts cotton and polyester fibers from blended garments, producing textile-to-textile recycled materials. These materials maintain a luxurious appearance and feel while performing as well as, if not better than, virgin synthetics. Together, these elements shape two distinct silhouettes that fuse sustainability, comfort, and style without compromise.
“Allbirds believes in making better things in a better way,” said Adrian Nyman, chief design officer at the brand. “Remix is the latest step in our innovation journey, driven by curiosity and openness to unexpected methods of creation.” The launch builds on Allbirds’ decade-long pursuit of sustainable innovation, following milestones like Futurecraft.Footprint, an ultra-low carbon running shoe developed with Adidas, and M0.0NSHOT Zero, the world’s first net zero carbon shoe crafted from carbon-negative regenerative wool.
