Venice-based materials company Algae Scope is developing a patented seaweed-derived functional powder that could provide a bio-based route to coatings for protective and performance textiles.
The technology converts seaweed biomass into a functional powder that can be incorporated into textile coatings or blended with other materials. It is being explored for applications requiring properties such as water and fire resistance, areas where conventional textile finishing can rely on persistent chemicals including PFAS.
A notable aspect of the process is its use of residues from alginate extraction. Rather than treating these remaining seaweed materials solely as waste, Algae Scope's technology seeks to extract additional value from the processing stream, creating a more circular approach to marine biomass utilisation.
However, the technology remains dependent on further validation before widespread commercial adoption. Key considerations will include durability, textile-process compatibility, cost, scalability and performance under demanding conditions.
