AGY’s S2 Glass fibre is being used by Indiana-based Terra Supreme Battery (TSB) in the composite grids of its new Group 31 bipolar lead-acid battery. The technology combines pure lead with high-strength glass fibre to create stronger and more stable internal battery grids.
The battery uses layers of S2 Glass fibre to reinforce its composite grids. According to AGY, the glass fibre is ten times stronger than steel by weight and helps maintain the shape and strength of the battery’s internal grid structure during repeated charging and discharging.
Patrick Hunter, CCO and president of AGY, said S2 Glass fibre was developed for applications where high strength, durability and dimensional stability are important. He added that Terra Supreme’s use of the material shows how advanced glass-fibre reinforcement can improve an established battery technology and address some of its long-standing performance challenges.
