Afterpay launches green shopping services

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2021-04-06 06:44:59 – Australia

Afterpay, a company based on the principle of buy now, pay later, has launched sustainable shopping to help customers create a more conscious and environmentally friendly wardrobe while also giving back to the environment.

Starting April 5th, consumers can use Afterpay's "top-up" service to donate $1 to Magpies & Peacock, a non-profit design house dedicated to breaking the cycle of waste in the fashion industry, and Surfrider, a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to protecting clean water and safe beaches. Afterpay will match every donation made by its customers.

Magpies & Peacock, as well as Surfrider, are pioneers in the fight against the waste cycle. Magpies & Peacocks is committed to the collection and sustainable reuse of post-consumer garments, scrap textiles, and accessories diverted from landfills, with the aim of disrupting the fashion industry's waste cycle and reducing its tremendous environmental and social effects. Through a strong advocacy network, Surfrider is committed to the conservation and enjoyment of the world's seas, waves, and beaches for all people.

In a statement, the CEO of Magpies & Peacocks, Sarah-Jayne Smith said they still ask themselves at Magpies & Peacocks how they can look at a problem from the perspective of People, Planet, and Benefit - how can they approach something head-on in a sustainable way by doing the right thing socially, environmentally, and economically.

She added that it's an attitude they extend to everything they do, no matter how small, from the goods they make or purchase to the way they teach the ability to their carbon footprint as a non-profit organization. It has the potential to have a major impact, not just in terms of winning hearts and minds, but also in terms of influencing meaningful change. They're ecstatic to be partnering with Afterpay as part of the process and proud to be a part of their Top Up Donation program.

Afterpay will debut its first-ever live shopping experience, which will feature sustainable brands that promote a more circular economy through environmentally friendly fashion and beauty. Afterpay's sustainable shopping event caters to millennial and Generation Z shoppers who want to shop ethically and mindfully.

Starting in mid-April, Afterpay will partner with MagicLinks, the only B-Corp Certified social commerce firm, to incorporate a live shopping technology network to encourage viewers to shop more mindfully. The seamless shopping experience will be available on Afterpay's website, allowing customers to build better, more sustainable wardrobes and beauty routines. Customers will be able to watch their favorite influencers live, search for their favorite eco-friendly brands in real-time, and pay for their purchases in four interest-free installments.

In a statement, the head of North America at Afterpay, Melissa Davis said they’re ecstatic to be able to provide their consumers with the opportunity to shop from fashion-forward brands in a responsible and sustainable manner while also supporting these vital organizations. They are proud to highlight organizations that are helping to address the complex challenges facing our planet. Gen Z and millennials are conscientious shoppers who make thoughtful decisions while they shop. Afterpay's live shopping integration will go live in mid-April for its 13 million customers, with plans to add more live shopping events in the months ahead.
