Adidas uses 96% recycled polyester in products

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2023-04-28 13:34:35 – Germany

Adidas has placed its sights on hitting its 2024 goals earlier than expected, referring to this accomplishment as its "personal best."

Adidas is on its way to totally replacing polyester earlier than anticipated. By the end of 2024, the pledge, which was initially made in 2017, sought to replace virgin polyester whenever possible with recycled polyester.

Adidas claims it has been aiming to lessen its reliance on virgin polyester ever since the first pair of high-performance shoes it produced in 2015 used recycled materials.

More than 90% of the polyester used in Adidas products will be recycled in 2021, according to a company announcement from last year. If all of the polyester had been virgin, 390,000 metric tons of CO2e would have been released into the atmosphere, which is enough to power 50,000 US homes.

Adidas has produced a brief film about its new "PB" to go along with the unveiling that features athlete Jazmin Sawyers. The movie emphasizes how proud the sports company is of its accomplishments and how determined it is to move on.

Viviane Gut, senior director of sustainability at Adidas, said that Adidas made a commitment in 2017 to replace virgin polyester with recycled material whenever possible by 2024, and they know that it is important that they continue to share their progress and deliver on that commitment. They are happy about this, but it's only a first step toward a bigger goal. They still have a lot of work to do if they're going to contribute more to the solution than the problem. They are still inspired to work together and innovate to open up new possibilities.

Adidas said that reaffirming its polyester pledge in 2017 was a critical first step in kicking off a transition within the company and throughout its whole supply chain. This was made feasible by developing technological solutions and conjuring up previously unthinkable possibilities.

The German sporting goods company emphasized once more that it was looking toward future advancements and innovations rather than just the achievement of its 2024 objective and recycled polyester.
