Adidas, Stella McCartney unveils “industry-first” viscose sportswear

Sportswear giant Adidas and luxury fashion firm Stella McCartney have collaborated to launch a new viscose sportswear range to show the possibilities of a circular fashion ecosystem.

According to Adidas, the tracksuit was created as a part of the New Cotton Project, an EU collaboration with 12 partners, and it changed the way clothing is constructed from a linear to a circular model by emphasizing both function and style as ensuring the garment’s end of life existence

The oversized gender-neutral silhouette combines peach-soft material with a neutral light grey and black color scheme and is comprised of 60% viscose and 40% organic cotton. Additionally, it is a part of Adidas' "Made to Be Rebuilt" prototype circularity initiative, a take-back program where customers may use it until it is worn out and then return it by scanning a QR code on the item so that it can be remade.

According to Adidas, less than 1% of all textiles in the world are being recycled to create new textiles. By gathering and sorting post-consumer end-of-life textiles, the consortium, which includes companies like Frankenhuis as partners, has created Infinna, a novel synthetic cellulosic fiber that resembles virgin cotton in both appearance and feel.

This is then transformed into a yarn for making clothing that is combined with organic cotton.

In a statement on the partnership, Stella McCartney said that material innovation is no different from how sport is about always refining the approach. It's been really thrilling to connect with like-minded minds in the fashion landscape to assist not only us, but the industry develop, innovate, and intentionally design. They are being challenged more than ever to discover innovative ways to realize the promise of circular fashion. They’re quite delighted to have created a piece of clothing for the next generation of activists that offers an end to the life of existence while still maintaining the Adidas by Stella McCartney brand's distinctive aesthetic.

Following the release of its Futurecraft loop shoe, an early prototype in aiding in the prolongation of the use of footwear, the "Made to Be Remade" campaign is Adidas' initial strategy for doing so. The creation of the Adidas by Stella McCartney garment is the most recent achievement in the company's attempts to create a marketable end-of-life garment, bringing it one step closer to its objective of eliminating plastic waste.

The Adidas app will start offering the Adidas by Stella McCartney Sportswear Tracksuit Viscose on October 6.
